The Internet of Things

The Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (“IoT”) is an innovative topic that we are borderline obsessed with here at Drake Homes.  We are proud to introduce this discussion as we also announce our all-new Connected Home Packages!

Why IoT?

Within the wide world of the Internet of Things, building smarter homes is an emerging slice of the IoT pie that Drake Homes can really dig our teeth into and make a difference.  We've all heard IBM talk about building a smarter planet.  Drake Homes is proud to lead the way as we do our part here in Iowa, by building smarter homes.

The fact is, home automation has been around for decades.  We may not be the Jetsons quite yet, but we’ve all seen over-complicated systems driven by expensive servers and impossible remotes.  Complex home automation is nice for wealthy, tech-savvy home owners, but we believe this will be a fading trend.  So much is possible with more simplified, affordable, and intelligent IoT products that give homeowners a clean, fun, and easy interface to interact with the connected home of the future.  As we shared with Des Moines Register, connected homes are no longer reserved for the rich and famous.

All-New Connected Home Packages

With our dedication to leading the way, we are very proud to announce all-new Connected Home Packages here at Drake Homes!  Many IoT products can be installed as DIY projects, but our team is now implementing smart home products that can be incorporated within the build of a new home.  By building a smart home from the ground up, we allow you the opportunity to own a smarter home that makes life easier, safer, and more efficient.

What is an IoT Product?

As the CCO of SmartThings shared in our recent interview, the dictionary has added the phrase “Internet of Things” and defined it as: “A proposed development of the Internet in which everyday objects have network connectivity, allowing them to send and receive data.”  In short, IoT products are meant to enhance our lives with clean user experiences that you control on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

IoT ProductsMore than just control, smart products can actually learn how you live, then intelligently cater your experience.  Yes, IoT has hints of Skynet from the movie Terminator, HAL 9000 from 2001: Space Odyssey, or the upcoming Johnny Depp movie, Transcendence.  It must be mentioned that there are critics to a more connected world.  Privacy concerns are real, but we all know the age of disconnected privacy is fading more every day.  Fortunately, with all the cool things being built to improve life for all of us, we believe this emergence of a more connected world is easy to like.

The Nest Thermostat is a product that many of us know about, but whether it's a large company launching something fresh or a Kickstarter campaign going big, new smart products are being developed everyday!

Here at Drake Homes, we have especially been impressed by innovative companies like Insteon, Sonos, Philips, Belkin, Insteon, Canary, Lockitron, DropCam, Nest, Quirky, Spark, Jawbone, and SmartThings.  In fact, we are excited to begin implementing a variety of IoT products from these industry leaders into our new connected home packages, as mentioned above.

We think you'll love learning more about all that your home can do for you and we look forward to collaborating to make your new home sing!

Why Now?

With increased consumer interest and exponentially more smart devices being used by practically everyone, it’s amazing to see how these new IoT products are being used in more homes than ever before!  According to this study conducted by Juniper Research and as this VentureBeat article highlights; in 2012 the smart home market was a $25 Billion industry.  In 2013, it increased to $33 Billion.  Looking ahead, many agree that the smart home ecosystem will more than double by 2017!  This amazing growth demands attention.

An Industry Ripe For Disruption

Within this “Wild West” of sorts, we’ve been truly inspired by what people are creating around the world.  Whether it’s Nest Labs being acquired by Google for $3.2 Billion, new smart products that are disrupting entire industries, or entire development platforms to connect new ideas together, the connected home industry is building…fast.

With so much innovation happening in this space, look for more ongoing discussion on The Connected Home and IoT overall.  In the meantime, below are two infographs presented by people leading the way with The Internet of Things.  Think big and cheers to disruption by innovation!
